Candice Swanepoel On Her New Nineties-Inspired Mother Denim Collaboration

“I have all the samples and I’ve been wearing them for about a month,” says Candice Swanepoel about a pair of denim jeans she sported while she was in London for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, “All of the girls are asking me about them!” The “girls” who Swanepoel is referring to are her fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels, and as for the piece of clothing that they swooned over, those are her jeans and the product of her collaboration with the denim brand Mother. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Swanepoel has entered the field of jean design: The supermodel has an impeccable denim collection. Whether she is exiting an airport or on the asphalt, the South African stunner has a knack making a pair of “mom jeans” look sexy, or upping the ante on a simple pair of cut-off shorts.

The collection, which includes seven styles that range from high-waisted to skinny jeans with slashed knees, along with appearance of an old-school button-down fly, is dotted with Candice’s favorite era of the nineties, as well as nods to Cindy Crawford’s short shorts in her 1992 Pepsi Super Bowl commercial. “I love that image, so that’s where it all started,” says Swanepoel. “It’s not that dress-up denim—it’s more ‘girl off-duty.’ That relaxed look that was still sexy. They just threw on a white shirt and the jeans kind of did it all.”

And though the collection may be based on bionic supermodel fits, Swanepoel has gone through the same problems as other women when it comes to issues surrounding the waist area, as well as the legs. “The fit in the bum is very important to me—I like that old Levi’s look, but I still need there to be enough stretch in the bum so it doesn’t squash down. We really tried to perfect the way it fit in the bum and the waist,” says Swanepoel. “And then the ankles as well. It’s hard to get jeans on if they are so tight-fitting on the ankles!”

Aside from perfected denim fits, Swanepoel also made sure to embed a bit of her roots into the collection. A portion of the proceeds from the denim collaboration will go to the South African–based organization mothers2mothers, which works to prevent the spread of HIV from mothers to their children. “I was looking for things that I have a personal connection to and so for years I’ve been trying to get more involved in things in South Africa. It is appropriate that it is mothers, and Mother for mothers2mothers,” says Swanepoel. “It’s good to raise awareness, and for us to do what we can to help.” Additionally, once again looking to her roots with South Africa and mothers in mind, Swanepoel included a tiny embroidery of her family crest. “It’s pretty little and funny—it’s a swan in a pool. When we were talking about details, I thought that was a cute touch,” says Swanepoel. “I thought if I’m putting my name on the jeans, my crest should be on it too—make my mama proud!”
