Being a Victoria’s Secret model is a lot of work, but the girls are especially busy this time of year as the lingerie giant prepares for its annual televised fashion show, which will be staged in London this December. Yesterday, Victoria’s Secret revealed the pièces de résistance for this year’s affair: two bejeweled fantasy bras which Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio will wear on the runway. Needless to say, VS season is in full swing and the models are dutifully promoting the retailer — especially now that the holidays are coming up.
This morning, Candice Swanepoel, last year’s Fantasy Bra model, was on hand at the Victoria’s Secret Herald Square store to promote the retailer’s holiday collection. Sparkly, lacy, frilly bras and panties in hues of red, lavender and black were on display as Candice, looking very sexy and chic in a high-slit asymmetrical skirt and black turtleneck, stopped by to chat with the press. The leggy South African beauty towered over us in her Christian Louboutin So Kate pumps, so we stood on our tiptoes and dished with her on everything from her pre-VS fashion show diet to regifting.
theFashionSpot: This is Victoria’s Secret’s first time showing in London. What are you most excited for?
Candice Swanepoel: I’m most excited for a totally different crowd. It’s been amazing here in New York, but I think the British people are going to freak out because it’s such an extravaganza. I feel like in America, we’ve gotten used to the luxury of VS, so for [the Brits] it’s going to be really exciting. I’m also looking forward to seeing different faces at the show. Plus, it’s always nice for us [models] to travel. The past few years, we’ve been here in New York, running around like crazy. It’s going to be nice — we’re all going to get on a plane together.
tFS: We’re sure there are a lot of guys who would love to be on that plane!
CS: We’re all going to be like [miming putting on a sleep mask], “Don’t talk to me!”
tFS: Hah! Are you going to indulge in any English treats once the show is over?
CS: I grew up on English treats because South Africa has such a big English influence, so I do love a full English breakfast. Eggs, bacon, the whole thing, which actually, I don’t cut out during the show because breakfast is just…you can eat whatever! There’s also shepherd’s pie. English food is all about homey, yummy potatoes and mash, so I’m definitely going to be indulging in that.
tFS: What’s the hardest workout you do to prepare for the show?
CS: The hardest is boxing, but I really enjoy it because it allows me to get a lot out. But the slow, resistance training that I do mostly is what really kills me. People think because it’s slow it doesn’t hurt, but [laughing] it’s that slow burn that gets me!
tFS: How does your diet change in preparation for the show?
CS: I eat really healthily in general. I just feel better that way, but I’ll eat more protein to try and build more muscle because I like strong legs and a bum on the runway. Usually, I don’t think too much about what I eat, other than if it’s fresh or healthy, but in the next five weeks, I’ll be thinking of mixing in veggies and protein with my meal. Maybe even a green juice, so I can feel like I’m doing good to my body.
tFS: The holidays are coming up — what’s the worst Christmas gift you’ve gotten?
CS: Thank God…when I was a kid, I usually got the things I wished for. But I think I got a weird box of biscuits from an aunt or something one year. I was like, “Umm, thanks? My mom could have bought me those!”
tFS: Do you ever regift?
CS: All the time. I’m guilty! It’s actually so nice to be able to do that for my mom and aunts and friends. I get so many beautiful things, but sometimes it’s not really my style, so it’s good to regift. If you haven’t worn it or opened it, it’s fine. Or at least I tell myself that!
tFS: Do you prefer a warm Christmas or cold Christmas?
CS: I’ve never had a cold Christmas, so I couldn’t really tell you, but I’m a summer baby. This kind of weather freaks me out. This weekend I had off, and everyone was like, “Come out! Come out!” and I was like, “Umm…no. I will be at home processing that the weather is not good anymore.” One day I’m gonna live somewhere where it’s summer all the time!

OK, so this party season how-to features one of the world’s greatest make-up artists, Pat McGrath MBE, and one of the world’s greatest faces, Candice Swanepoel, so we’re aiming high with our make-up this party season.
We’re taking you backstage on set of the new Max Factor campaign with McGrath, its global creative director, “to show you this beautiful colourful couture look on Candice,” as McGrath explains, to pick up a little party inspiration more than anything – after all this is a “very bold, brave, decadent and hedonistic look,” she says.
Bold and brave it may be, we’re taking what we can from McGrath’s lesson in festive make-up by way of “bold shimmers, lots of colour, full blush, glossy lips – because they’re perfect for the party season.”
However, maybe not all at once. The idea is that “this is a really strong couture look that women can take inspiration from.”
“You can take a blush, you can use the bold lip. You know, even use the eye shadow and just work it as an eyeliner. So you can literally break it apart to make the perfect party look.” And if you are after a colour pop for a party follow McGrath’s tip and “apply the colour using a damp brush so that you get more colour intensity.”
“If you’re brave do the whole thing,” adds McGrath, “Other than that, just take elements.”
If there is any supermodel whose secrets we want to know, its Candice Swanepoel, who celebrates her 26th birthday today and who has already passed many impressive career milestones.
The flaxen-haired modeling talent from South Africa is a classic beauty with the kind of jaw-dropping physique that made her a breakout star in the competitive world of Victoria’s Secret modeling. It takes effort to keep her looks in peak condition, and Swanepoel divulges the details of her diet, workout routine, and health regimen in an interview with Savoir Flair. As her job demands a high amount of muscle concentration and hours spent posing, she is careful not to overdo her workouts, although, that doesn’t stop her from sneaking in a few squats. In her own words, “you can do them anywhere!”
Read on for an in-depth look at the workout routine and positive healthy lifestyle of the beautiful birthday girl.
What kind of attitude do you have towards staying healthy and fit?
Staying healthy and fit is my job but to be able to work the way we do, I also need to do it. Taking care of myself makes me feel better; it makes me able to perform as a model. If I was unhealthy I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. I feel lucky that it is part of my job to take care of myself.
How do you sneak in exercise into your working day?
I usually can’t but our work is so physical, shooting lingerie and swimwear, that I work my body out all day. I know which muscles to target – as I’m posing, in a way I’m actually working out. I don’t pose lazily – I pose with purpose and use every muscle.
Do you stick to a regular workout routine for a long time?
No, I know my body well enough to know when I need to rest if I’ve been working a lot. I can also feel when I need to focus on intensifying my exercise for a few weeks. It’s all about balance… You can’t overwork your body.
When you’re traveling or when pressed for time, what exercises do you like to do?
Squats are always good and you can do them anywhere! Because traveling is physical already, I try not to overexert myself. If I feel like I need to do something before a shoot, I’ll do some resistance training on towel in hotel.
Do you have a go-to gym outfit? What’s your preferred style?
I don’t have a go to outift. I like to mix up my outfits to make it more interesting. Sometimes I like to go more “hip-hop” and other times more feminine, like when I do Pilates and ballet. I like to dress for the exercise I’m doing and Victoria’s Secret Sport has such a great range that I can find everything I need there. I love the Victoria’s Secret Incredible Front Close Bra for more intense activity and The Angel Sport Bra for low-intensity activity.
What is in your gym bag?
Right now I have ankle weights, resistance bands, and water, so that I can really be on the go. I also love having the Victoria’s Secret Sport Incredible Front Close Bra in there – it’s so comfortable and supportive. It’s always good to have some fragrance in my bag to put on after a workout – right now I love the Victoria’s Secret Scandalous scent.
How has your approach to your own physical and mental well-being transformed since becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel?
When I started with VS, I started learning more about what I should eat, how my body works, what exercise is best for me, and how far I can push my body. Working for VS has also taught me a lot about work and life balance.
What’s on the horizon for you as a Victoria’s Secret Angel?
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show! We are going to London this year and it is going to be incredible. London is very exciting for all of us and we have a bunch of amazing trips coming up – a lot of beautiful beaches.
What’s currently on your workout playlist?
Trap music – it’s like hardcore electronic.
