Candice Swanepoel interviewed for UBeauty’s blog

Our series featuring the daily routines, expert advice, and beauty tips of industry insiders (read: those who’ve got it down to a science). Because we should all have a Protocol.

There are supermodels, and then there are Supermodels. The inimitable Candice Swanepoel clearly falls into the elite second category. Not only is she one of the most recognizable Victoria Secret’s Angels of all time, the South African-born beauty is a notable philanthropist and entrepreneur; Candice founded the eco-conscious swim and lifestyle brand Tropic of C in 2018, “born from a life spent on the beach,” and needless to say, it’s garnered more than a cult following.

As the line’s creative director, she has seamlessly merged sustainability and distinctly effortless summer style (their signature Praia top, a modern wraparound update on the classic triangle string bikini, is instantly recognizable, as are their handmade crochet pieces). Tropic of C is also created with both the environment and female empowerment in mind. They have an ongoing partnership with Mothers2Mothers, an international coalition devoted to ending AIDS and creating brighter futures for women in sub-Saharan Africa, with whom Candice is also an ambassador.

Here, the mother of two shares her advice on achieving that extra glow, why hitting reset is key, and how to make every day feel like a beach day.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I definitely go through cycles, so it really depends on how I’m doing. Sometimes I’m so bombarded with work and being pulled in a million different directions that I don’t really have a schedule or time to focus on a beauty routine. I’m lucky if I can make a coffee and sit in peace for 10 minutes.

I think we all just try to keep up with how fast life has become, but I also know when I need to stop and take care of my wellness inside and out, so those mornings would be waking up and not looking at my phone immediately and having a coffee and breakfast or a smoothie to start the day.

Ideally, I’ll have gone to bed early and wake up early enough to go for a swim in the ocean, catching that light early sun. That truly is the best way to start my day.

Describe your morning and evening skincare routines.

Mornings, I cleanse, tone, and moisturize, and use a strong SPF. Nighttime, I double-cleanse, tone, and use a retinol or U Beauty‘s amazing Resurfacing Compound and moisturize with a thicker product.

I love your hydrating moisturizer, The SUPER Hydrator, and I never forget my eye cream. If I have time, I use product on my body. I use The SCULPT Arm Compound on my entire body.

Do you have a fitness routine? If yes, what are your objectives/goals when you work out?

My routine is constantly changing but depending on what is going on in my life, I am either allowing my body to rest or working out for a specific goal. My goals when working out are to build on my foundation. I am naturally extremely thin, so I need to add weights to keep my curves, which is how I feel my best and most beautiful. I don’t overdo it, as I like to keep a natural feminine figure. Thirty minutes a day, four times a week does the trick for me–if I can be consistent. Which is not always the case.

I also work out just for the mental strength. If I am overwhelmed, I feel working out helps me to feel mentally stronger, too.

Have you tried any in-office cosmetic procedures (lasers, microneedling, etc.)?

Yes, I’ve tried a couple of things. There is no miracle procedure, in my opinion, but I do find laser procedures to be preventative and help the skin from aging. I have oily skin, so I need to do extraction facials occasionally and am a firm believer in exfoliating and trying your best to stay out of the sun–something that is very hard for me to do.

Which procedures do you love, and which would you never try (or never try again!)?

I tried microneedling once and broke out terribly, probably also why I’m not very experimental when it comes to new facials.

What’s your diet like on a typical day?

If I am home with my children, we love to switch breakfasts up: some days eggs, some days pancakes. I love a smoothie in the morning or post-activity. I love homecooked meals. We usually have rice and beans in the fridge for everyday; a very Brazilian meal, with a protein, vegetables, and salad. Then at dinner, I enjoy sushi or Italian food.

I don’t stick to a specific diet. I eat whatever my body needs or craves. I have to eat a lot to maintain my weight, so I’m lucky I can eat anything, but I do focus on foods that make me feel good and give me more energy.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed?

Drink a glass of water and put on eye cream.

Who’s your beauty idol?

I don’t have a specific beauty idol. I respect women who age gracefully and are not afraid to show that they have lived a full life, laugh lines and all. I’m a
firm believer in letting your natural beauty shine.

What’s the most high-maintenance aspect of your beauty protocol?

I try not to have any part in high-maintenance things. I love to be able to do as much upkeep as I can in the comfort of my own home, as I don’t need more chores. I think the most high-maintenance aspect is my hair. My colorist Jacob is a perfectionist and it takes time, but it’s definitely worth it.

I also invested in laser hair removal for a few years and that was a pain in the ass to make sure I made the appointments at the correct times, but now that it’s done all I need is the occasional maintenance.

What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve gotten?

Try to keep out of the sun, and beauty starts from the inside-out. Feed your body with good ingredients and it will show in the glow.

What’s your 24-hour plan for getting ready for a big event or photoshoot?

If I can get a workout in, that always makes me feel more confident. Exfoliating and making sure my skin is soft and moisturized. Also, making sure I’m eating well and getting enough water to be able to endure a long day on set. I love a quick sheet mask or under-eye patch in the morning to give that extra hydration.

What do you do when you want to reset, regroup, or detox?

I disappear from society. Haha. Avoid eating out and drinking alcohol and make sure I’m going to sleep early and exercising. Rest is extremely important for me to have the energy to do the things that help me reset.

Candice Swanepoel and Tina Chen Craig speak about their brands and more on Instagram Live.

On June 29, 2022 Candice Swanepoel went live with UBeauty‘s founder, Tina Chen Craig to speak about their brands and answer some fan questions.

Here is the link to watch the live and some highlights from it.

Tina Chen Craig on how she met Candice:

“It was at an event. You were the supermodel and it was your event and you came up to me and said you liked my Chanel bag and whatever I wore, and we just became friends and exchanged our phone numbers.”

Candice on her first impressions on Tina:

“You had your thebagsnob account and I said, who’s this lady? And like, everything you wore, I said «I need it» after seeing you wearing it.

Tina spoke also about Candice being one of her original clients and hosting each other’s launch events:

“She was one of my first original clients, and when she launched Tropic of C and came to Dallas I hosted her event, and when I launched mine in NY she hosted mine. It’s like, I just love my group of female supporting friends.

And remember when I gave you the first sample of your surfacing compound and you were in my car
and you said, let me start with my chest and I’ll move up to my face.”

Candice answers:

“Girl, the glow. I’m like watching your stories. I’m like what is this woman doing, like the products, because me I don’t have a lot of time. So you know, it’s important to have the products that like, really work. And it just makes it more simple.”

On their daily routine:

Candice: “I mean, I really keep it simple. Clone tone moisturize, I’m a psycho with the spf because in Miami, you know it’s really hard to stay out of the sun. And I spent so many years working in the sun, like from sunrise to sunset.

And like, after 30, you really have to start, you know, taking care. And then I use, I mean religiously, I use your resurfacing compound. I feel that really works and helps, you know any coloration.

Yes! I mean there was a time, I was putting that all over my body.”

Tina revealed she’s working on a full body compound only for Candice, extra strength like the arm sculpt.

“Yes so the arm sculpt is totally different, because this like actually tightens the skin.”

Candice on what she eats that she thinks help her skin:

“Like my diet isn’t really that complicated, you know, I have naturally. I’m really skinny, so I have to work hard on eating a lot of protein. Carbs as well, to like, keep a body. Because I feel better when I have, you know, thighs and a butt. So, I basically have to like, drink mass gaining protein shakes.

But, um it’s really for me. I feel better, like with good ingredients. I have more energy.

So, I basically you know eat whatever my babies eat. We have always rice and beans in the house, which is like a very brazilian thing. Typical lunch would be rice beans salad and a protein shake.”

Tina asked Candice if she cooks a lot since she’s always asking for recipes.

“I cook a lot, depends on where I’m in life. To cook I have to be in a very calm space, and it’s kind of a little bit of therapy.

But my dream is to have my own vegetable garden, I have to, like you know, my herbs and I grow arugula and stuff like that in Miami.

So, I like to have things that I’ve seen grow and and I’m feeding my body with things I know where they come from. That’s definitely a big dream of mine, to be able to grow and cook my own produce.”

Tina speaks about one of her trips:

“I was in North Carolina on a farm for seven days, and she had like a grocery store. She had just the freshest kale, and the cauliflower, and broccoli, lettuce, green beans, snap peas and berries, fruits and everything. I was like, oh my god!”

Candice mentions her childhood in a farm in South Africa:

“I grew up on a farm in South Africa, and my mom’s vegetable garden was like, the size of a football field. And, there’s a funny story.

When I would go for sleepovers at friends she would force me to take a basket, like, full of fresh produce. And, as a little girl I used to think it was a embarrassing thing to have to do that. And now, as an adult, I’m like, oh my god, that would be like the dream somebody just showing up with a basket of like, fresh produce from the farm.”

Candice was asked if she could speak Afrikaans:

“I cannot speak afrikaans anymore, I grew, you know, in South Africa, there’s many different languages and you either grow up English or Afrikaans, so half of my family is afrikaans and half is English, and I grew up speaking English at home.

I would speak like basic afrikaans with my Oma and oppa, which is grandfather and grandmother in afrikaans, but I left when I was 15.

And you know, if you never hear the language.
I lost it, most of it.

I think if I lived in South Africa again, I would be able to, because I cup language pretty easily.

Um, I mean, I understand, but I don’t speak anymore. And it’s kind of a big shame to my name, because Swanepoel is the most afrikaans last name that exists.

There’s many Swanepoels by the way, It’s kind of like, the Jones of South Africa. So, when people meet me and if they’re afrikaans, they start speaking afrikaans to me because you know, my last name is Afrikaans. So, sorry, I need to speak it.”

Tina asked Candice what was the inspiration for the designs of Tropic of C.

“I wanted to add some more structured pieces, because initially, I mean I design everything basically for myself. I’m like what do I want to wear this summer, but the demand for different styles and different cuts is. Those are our new structured bras.

It just holds you in and waits the curves for me is like the most important thing, I start with color stories. I mean I’m constantly being inspired by different things and saving inspiration images, and that’s kind of how I start a collection with a vibe and a concept.

And then, you know, I take it to my team. We look at different fabrics and colors, and make a color story that fits with the styles.

I love different patterns and textures because a lot of the suits are just very simple and classic.”

Candice’s beauty tips:

“I kind of have my like trap, and you know your your super hydrator. My favorite primers to use.

I love to have a glow, you know, so it doesn’t look too matted and too cakey, so, I’ll start with the super hydrator, and then I do everything with my hands, because I feel like the warmth of my fingers just makes everything sit. I’m not much nicer.

I kind of mix a foundation depending on my color. If I’ve had sun, if I’m tanned or now I’m trying to stay out of the sun, so I’m a lot older than usual, yeah, very light base.

And then another thing I picked up from you is the clay depot concealers, which are like amazing.

And then I do a little concealer, and I love a little lip tint.

It’s super simple. My routine for Summer it’s about keeping my luggage as small as possible.”

Alo x Tropic of C collaboration is live

Alo Yoga and Tropic of C have officially launched their collaboration with the limited edition pieces presented during last week on their websites.

We’ve partnered with Tropic of C on an exclusive, limited-edition collection, with select styles handmade in Northern Peru in collaboration with female artisans. Learn more about the traditional art form of Andean tramado crochet and the modern, game-changing way these artisans work.

Unlike weaving on a cumbersome backstrap loom, Andean tramado crochet can be conveniently worked on just about anywhere. The earliest examples of this tighter, less bulky variant on traditional crochet dates back over 8000 years — to the earliest period of human occupation in the Americas.

Each piece is made by hand by Quechua and Mochica women across 3 regions of Northern PeruPacasmayo, Cajamarca and Huamachuco. Nine individual collectives comprise a team of 120 women, who work in the home or in community centers where they can care for young children and family while generating an income by practicing a traditional art form that’s been passed down from generation to generation.

Working with Tropic of C provides the female artisan collectives with more than just employment — each collective is provided with computer literacy classes, an education on critical production skills that allow them to scale while maintaining size consistency, and guidance on becoming formal organizations, so that these artisans are able to bring their work to craft fairs. Classes in accounting and assistance in opening bank accounts increase economic agency for women at all levels of education.

Meeting increased demand for these stunning designs not only keeps the art form of Andean tramado crochet alive — it’s also elevated the way these textiles are made. Through collaboration and skill sharing, the female artisans have made adaptations that allow for consistent, bulk production of one-of-a-kind textiles — a first of its kind.

The crocheted pieces included in our Alo x Tropic of C capsule collection reflect the values of both brands — to live mindfully, connect with air, land and ocean, and practice humankindness.

Alo Yoga

Candice Swanepoel on her partnership with Alo Yoga

Candice Swanepoel and Alo Yoga are teaming on a collection of elevated swimwear basics.

The model and her Tropic of C brand are partnering with Alo Yoga on a collection that offers bikinis, one-piece bathing suits, woven hats and bandeau tops in red, orange, black and mauve. The pieces are meant to be mixed and matched and paired with other Alo Yoga styles.

“I wanted this collection to be about simplicity, elegance and power,” Swanepoel said. “The pieces are simple with unique colors, which I think will stand out on any summer adventure. Each piece is designed to accentuate the female form, so fit has always been a key part of my designs and you can feel it when you put these pieces on.”

The collection, particularly its woven pieces, were handmade by indigenous female artisans in northern Peru. In addition to employing the artisans, Tropic of C offers the women computer literacy classes and other education to help them grow their own artisan businesses. This kind of philanthropy is engrained in Swanepoel’s brand, which regularly partners with global charities and works with artisans across the world.

Swanepoel explained her favorite pieces from the collection are the red and black swimsuits, as they are classic swimwear staples. She also stated she likes the handmade woven pieces.

“Our design process often starts with a color palette,” she said. “We worked with Alo on what their upcoming color stories look like and built a collection that would complement each other. We want the girl to be able to wear the swimwear together with some of the workout pieces or even as streetwear. We then chose some of our most loved styles that are simple and functional for whatever activities our girls are doing, whether it’s on the beach or beyond.”

The collaboration is not Alo Yoga’s latest foray into swimwear. The brand previously teamed with Frankies Bikinis last summer.

The Alo Yoga x Tropic of C collection will be available through both brands’ websites and at select Alo Yoga stores across the country. The collection ranges in price from $70 to $150.
